Hey Fit Readers,
This morning on the front page of the Houston Chronicle, there is an article called "preschooler obesity plunges". Wahoo! That's great....how are the numbers going down? Well, it's starts with you....yes, you, the PARENT. What are you feeding your kids? Is it all sugar? Parents are starting to look for healthier options for their kids with fewer calories. Stick to the basics! Proteins, fruits, veggies, carbs, and complex sugars will balance your kid's diet and keep these child obesity numbers down.
So, when you are grocery shopping for the family, where do you shop? Down the aisles and in the frozen foods? Or on the perimeter? I prefer the perimeter! That's right....walk around the aisles and get your fruits and vegetables, your meats, your cheeses, yogurts, milks, and eggs. Yes, of course you need some staple items on the aisles....whole grain breads and rices, for example.
But what about the toddler snacks? What snacks do you feed your toddlers? Fit Baby loves strawberries, string cheese, cottage cheese, applesauce, and whole grain goldfish....just to name a few. Some of these are healthier than others, but they all contribute to our growing kiddo! I am not against giving my toddler sugar or bread or candy, but he gets all of these things in moderation. When preparing his snacks, I try to make sure he is getting a fruit and a carb or a carb and a protein. Mix and match a healthy snack with a treat. Goldfish and strawberries, bananas and peanut butter, squeeze 'ems and crackers, etc.
Kids should get KID food....just in moderation and not junk food all day long. This starts with YOU buying the right choices for your growing kids. They ARE the future!
Shop smart and STAY FIT!
